Within working on our Db1, i ran accross this poster which illustrates the use of typography in an intresting method.
The layout of diffrent type elements, such as the thickness, weight, size, type style and space, tend to distract one from the actual text content or message.
For example, the word behold is very distracting and one's eye tends to keep on comming back to that spot.

Type basics

Basic issues in type design are pointed out on this site such as spacing, kerning, black vs. white, sizing, small caps, style, etc…

As we all know spacing is a very important element when creating a document in general, it’s the difference between success and failure, too many elements can create clutter which distracts the reader from the message, the type, the words, the characters.

I was not aware that type had rhythm, apparently much more important than the shapes of the characters, is the rhythm of the type.

"The white spaces inside and in between letters are defining the rhythm, much more than the black shapes of the letters. When you manage to create a good rhythm in your line of text, your type gets more readable and gives a balanced end result."

Digitizing sketches

It seems that it has always been easier to sketch out what you want fist with the simple use of a pencil and then digitizing the object, but when it comes to tracing your text with a Bezier based pen tool, too many points on the character can often become a problem, which i have run into in the past.

There were a couple of cool tricks along the way with this reading such as the "copy paste trick" although i found the the bottom of the "u" to be a little offsetting.

Next

This image was altered, to create more depth between the background the the letters itself. the hight contrast of the black backrground blending into the "t" and the blinding white of the"x" creates a sense of depth.

The word I've chosen to work with is"Next".

To me the word, surrounds the notion of evolving, constantly changing, such as what is to come, perhaps even exploring the unknown. Space when working with type is very important, when trying to convey a certain massage as well. For this part of the exercise i decided to play with the kerning of the type. Initially, each letter the "N", "E", "X" and the"T" are placed almost on top of each other, making the word almost unrecognizable. The kerning is played with so that one can eventually recognize the formation of a word, the word "Time". The images below illustrate this precess. some of the images taken came out blurry, but rather an remove then, i chose to keep them because the king of give a sense of depth to the images.

Commercails

For Db1, we we're asked to go around and find interesting character shapes.During the week i came across this commercial that i found fascinating in it's typographic content. It's the Zellers Campaign which task is to state the company "Offers Everything from A to Z"
The commercial is a 30 second add which uses objects to compose letters of the whole English alphabet. For example the Q is composed of q-tips, the T of Toasters, the C of cupcakes and so on... these are a few images captured from the commercial and the link to the video and more information on the campaign.

Dart 331 week 1

My name is Sabreena Aneesa Mohamed; I am currently a third year student at Concordia University and in my second year of the specialization in Computational Arts program. In my studies as a CART student I would also like to balance out the design aspect of the program and pursue more design classes to better my skills as a graphic designer.

Before Concordia I did a three year program at John Abbott College in the field of Publication design and Hypermedia Technologies(PDHT). This is a program designed to combine print and web based media work. After my completion of the program I worked with the head designer of Alio tours, (a MontrĂ©al based travel tour company) to produce the seasonal catalogues and constantly update the company’s catalogue on the web site. The greater part of my work has been print based. After working with the company for about a year I decided to go back to school…and here I am.

I was introduced to the world of typography in my studies as a PDHT student. The program gave us a brief background into typefaces, but never really went into too much depth on the subject. As I entered into more design classes at Concordia, I realized how important the subject was in relation to the appearance of a final design project, hence the reason for my interest in taking this class.

Last semester I experimented with a typography course and had a great experience working with different fonts such as the Arabic font faces, this semester i hope to push my typographic skills further...
